Dallas’ golden boy goes down, are the Cowboys doomed?
After an abysmal 19-3 losing effort for Dallas in their Sunday night matchup against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, many media pundits are questioning whether paying Prescott upwards of forty million dollars a year is worth it, after an injury prone tenure and lack of elite production. In their week one matchup, Prescott had a very sub-par performance which saw him complete 14 of his 29 passes for 134 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. Prescott would eventually leave the game late in the fourth quarter after his hand collided with a pair of Buccaneers defender’s helmets twice. It was revealed that Prescott broke his right thumb and is projected to return anywhere from 6-8 weeks, he did undergo successful surgery on Monday and will be expected to make a smooth recovery. In the absence of their star quarterback, many questions arise around the status of the Cowboys season and playoff hopes, many questioning how an offense which already looked atrocious in week one, would look moving forward? Will backup Cooper Rush be their guy at QB in the meantime? Does Jimmy Garoppolo get a call from Jerry Jones? Will head coach Mike McCarthy survive and keep his job? And with the injury history is it time to have a contingency plan in place and look ahead to life after Dak Prescott for the Cowboys? Well there’s no question Dak is a top 15 quarterback, he’s good but not elite. You can win with “just good” quarterbacks but a “just good” quarterback is not enough to pick up the slack and carry an offense when your star players in CeeDee Lamb and Ezekiel Elliot are having off nights, Sunday night was exhibit A for all the Dak naysayers.
